Majlis Monitor, currently available only in Farsi, is the first comprehensive attempt to monitor the work of Iranian parliamentarians. Based at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs, with research led by ASL19, the project aspires to provide expert analysis and create opportunities for informed conversation to support increased transparency and accountability within the parliamentary system of Iran. Given the limited official spaces available for Iranians to share their opinion with elected officials, and in cases government’s intolerance for criticism, it is unclear whether such a project could have emerged from Iran. Majlis is the Farsi word for parliament.
We’re very excited to be a part of the OpeningParliament community, and hope we will be able to grow together with a global movement for parliamentary accountability.
Why is Majlis Monitor important?
Although a great deal of information about MPs can be found online, information is diffuse, limited and often hard to access and understand for many Iranians. Majlis Monitor aggregates information about the parliament using clear and informative profile pages for each official, committee and political faction, all organized to optimize user experience and accessibility.
